Building Career Pathways for Wake County Students

Together, we can build future-ready students. Accelerate is WakeEd Partnership’s new workforce development initiative that partners businesses with teachers and students to bring authentic, real-world learning experiences to Wake County classrooms and to connect students with employers to explore career pathways.

PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS

SummerSTEM

SummerSTEM is a program that enriches educators’ understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the workplace using Project-Based Learning (PBL) with an emphasis on STEM businesses and careers. In addition to direct instruction and coaching in lesson design, 100 K-12 educators participate in immersive experiences with local companies, exploring targeted career fields they can take back to the classroom.

Connecting Industry to Math Instruction (CIMI)

CIMI is a partnership between Wake Technical Community College, WCPSS, and WakeEd Partnership, that seeks to connect direct math instruction with real-world industry practices. Teachers engage in an immersion experience, provided by industry partners, and are in turn asked to create a Contextualized Math Activities Resources (CMAR) that integrates the industry inspired activities into the mathematics curriculum in high schools and community colleges.

PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS

Career Accelerator

Career Accelerator is a new workforce development program created to provide high school students in 10th through 12th grade with immersive experiences with local companies exploring targeted career fields. This program will be hosted at one site in each of the Wake County Public School System’s nine regions. In addition to immersion experiences, students will receive coaching and instruction in other workforce development areas, such as CV building, social media use, and interviewing skills.

Career Exploration

Career Exploration is a new workforce development program providing middle school students in 7th grade with short burst immersive experiences to explore career opportunities in a multitude of career fields. This program includes a short immersion with a company, a post-immersion Q&A with company employees, and career guidance from a school Career Development Coordinator.

Career Conversations

Career Conversations, presented by TowneBank, connects employers and students digitally through a growing online library of video interviews with professionals from a variety of jobs. Together, we are providing additional opportunities for middle and high school students to connect with diverse industries and employers, great leaders, and even potential mentors.

SCHOOL-BASED INITIATIVES

GRADE-LEVEL READING

Partners Read

The importance of children’s early literacy development cannot be overstated. Third grade is a turning point for children. Up to that point, they are learning to read, beyond that they are reading to learn. WakeEd Partnership is committed to helping Wake County children reach this important milestone. Our Partners Read program places community volunteers in elementary schools to read with struggling first and second grade students and provides new books to fill their home libraries.

Virtual Library

Pick a Book. Read Along. Repeat. When Wake County schools closed during the pandemic, Partners Read volunteers created a virtual read-aloud library, uploading weekly read-aloud videos for all students to enjoy.

WAKE Up and Read

WakeEd serves on the leadership team for WAKE Up and Read, a community-wide collaborative aligned with the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. Program efforts address school readiness, summer learning loss, school attendance, and health and wellness. WakeEd is also the fiscal sponsor for the annual WAKE Up and Read Book Drive.

SCHOLARSHIPS

WakeEd Partnership works to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that sets them up for success after high school. In 2018, WakeEd established its first scholarship program and this continued support enables students to pursue a Baccalaureate Degree.

The Coach Bob Pittard Scholarship

The Coach Bob Pittard Scholarship Fund is available to graduating student athletes from Green Hope High School and Apex High School, located in Wake County, North Carolina who, during their high school years, earned a varsity letter for participation in a full season in a varsity sport.
