WAKE COUNTY – Lillian Dawson, a senior at Broughton High School, is the 2006 recipient of the Susan Ellis Roberts Scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of a former Wake County public school teacher and administrator who sought throughout her life and career to encourage creativity and leadership, particularly in those students she described as “diamonds in the rough.”

Dawson, whose creative talent is filmmaking, will use the one-time award of $5,000 to cover educational expenses at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Dawson, a resident of Rolesville, studied video production at Broughton, taking video classes, working with the school’s news crew, serving as a teacher’s assistant, and participating in the Movie Makers club. She was recognized as Broughton’s Producer of the Year as a junior and served as head videographer and editor with

Michael Kennedy at Hot Summer Night’s five theatrical productions. “Lillian’s commitment to video production programs and theater arts will take her far in life,” said Brian Martin, video production instructor at Broughton High School. “She is dedicated in whatever task she is assigned to do – from setting up lights for a theater production, to editing for hours after school, to simply helping out with moving equipment. She truly is a dependable, creative student.”
